When you're on the water, watch for turtle heads. Don't laugh... Turtles live in underwater structure like brush piles and submerged rock piles. The same environment that bass use to stalk they're prey. When you see turtles poking their heads up, it's a sure bet they're above bass territory. I've caught Big Bass right below where the turtles come up for air. Try it you'll see.
How Do You Estimate the Weight of a Trophy Bass?
If you want to release a trophy bass, but don't have an accurate scale, here's a handy formula that will give you a close approximation of its weight:
Assuming you've caught a 25 inch bass( tip of the nose to the tip of the tail) with a 20 inch girth ( thickest part of the body):
John Fox's Bass Guide Service takes pride in putting our clients on the "BIG BASS" for a day of "catching" not just fishing.
Tips For Catching "Short Strikers"
For spinnerbait fisherman, short strikes are a common problem. If fish are consistently nudging the bait but you are not hooking them, or you're losing too many hooked fish, you'll have to make some adjustments.
Try these suggestions.
Shorten the skirt or thin it out so the bait has a smaller profile.
Switch Blades to down size the bait.
Change the color of the skirt or trailer to draw more aggressive strikes.
Shorten the trailer if you feel bass are nipping at the tail and missing the hook.
Do not forget the trailer hook on every spinnerbait you throw!
